Strong storms moved across much of Alabama, bringing hail, high winds, and heavy rainfall as a cold front passes through the state.
The National Weather Service warns that the strongest storms will be capable of producing wind gusts up to 60 mph and hail the size of quarters.
Authorities in Colbert County Monday afternoon said they were responding to reports of downed trees near the northern state line, and officials in Lauderdale County have reported street flooding and dime-size hail. A dog was killed in Madison County after its shelter was struck by lightning and caught fire.
A severe thunderstorm watch covering more than a dozen counties was extended until 9 p.m., and Alabama Power officials say 189,000 customers as of 4:30 p.m. were without power.
