A plea deal reveals that an Alabama sheriff’s deputy will plead guilty to assaulting a man suffering from a mental health crisis. In 2023, Tony Mitchell died in the local jail just two weeks later after he was detained in a concrete cell covered in feces with no toilet or access to medical attention. -
An Alabama judge is ruling that a police officer was not acting in self-defense when he shot an armed Black man who was standing in his own front yard. Body camera footage shows the officer shooting 18 bullets less than two seconds after identifying himself as law enforcement. -
This week marks two hundred years since a 1825 tour of the United States by the Marquis de Lafayette. The French general served under George Washington during the Revolutionary War. A now closed GoFundMe site includes close to twenty six thousand dollars for the legal defense of Alireza Doroudi. Donors sent amounts ranging from five to three hundred dollars. It’s been just over a week since ICE agents arrested the engineering doctoral candidate. -

Both the University of Alabama and federal immigration officials confirm that an Iranian UA doctoral student is in ICE custody, but few details are being made available. Alabama Public Radio was contacted by classmates of the student, identified in published reports as Alireza Doroudi, was detained by ICE agents this week. The student's F-1 student had reportedly been revoked. However, the reasons behind Doroudi’s arrest remain unclear. It’s just the latest student to be detained by the Trump administration. -

The justices Monday are taking up a challenge to Louisiana’s congressional map. Just two years ago, the court ruled 5-4 that Alabama discriminated against Black voters by adopting a congressional map with just one majority Black district. -
James H. Harvey III is 101 years old and one of the last surviving Tuskegee Airmen. The Black U.S. Air Force pilots and crew based at the Tuskegee Institute in Alabama fought in North Africa and Europe in World War II. One of their last accomplishments was winning the first U.S. Air Force Gunnery Meet in 1949, a forerunner of the U.S. Navy “Top Gun” school.
