Alabamians are remembering the April 27th, 2011 tornadoes that rampaged across the state.

Now, the National Weather Service in Alabama is using a new severe weather warning system.

Stephen Latimer is a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Huntsville. He says this new system provides more details about the storms.

Two dead, five missing after storm hits boat race

Sailboats participating in the Dauphin Island Regatta

Two bodies have been recovered and five other sailors are missing after a powerful storm capsized several sailboats participating in a regatta near Mobile Bay.

Authorities say most, but not all those missing were participating in the Dauphin Island Regatta, which included over 100 sailboats and nearly 200 participants. Crews are still searching for the five missing sailors.

Coast Guard: Tug Boat Sparked April Barge Explosion


A Coast Guard report says a passing tugboat helped spark the massive explosions that rocked the Mobile River and injured three people in April.

A preliminary report   says workers were cleaning fuel storage tanks on two barges moored at Oil Recovery Co. in Mobile on April 24.

The report says flammable vapors from the barges entered the engine room of the towing boat Safety Runner, causing a brief fire. Investigators believe the flames traveled back to the barges and resulted in the explosions.
