Alabama's school superintendent says the State Board of Education didn't relinquish control of school standards when it adopted the Common Core standards for schools statewide.


Superintendent Tommy Bice talked about the standards Tuesday because a state Senate committee is scheduled to consider a bill Wednesday that would repeal the standards. Critics of the national standards say they take away local control and give too much control to Washington.

Ala. Senate Delays School Flexibility Bill

It will be Thursday before the Alabama Senate considers a school flexibility bill approved by the state House.

A school flexibility bill recently passed by the Alabama House won't come up in the Senate until at least Thursday.


The Senate's Republican leadership had planned to ask the Senate to pass the bill Tuesday. But Senate President Pro Tem Del Marsh, R-Anniston, says they decided to wait because three Republican senators were either absent or late Tuesday. He says he hopes to bring up the bill Thursday.

California Candidate Drops Out Of Alabama Search

The search for Alabama's next two-year college chancellor is down to two after one candidate drops out.

One of the three finalists to be Alabama's two-year college chancellor has withdrawn his name.

Gregory Gray announced that he has decided to stay in California as chancellor of the Riverside Community College District. His decision came after district board members and others asked him to stay.
