DA Looking At Ala. Senate Candidate's Expenditures

A district attorney in east Alabama says he has begun a preliminary investigation into the campaign finances of Republican state Senate candidate Tim Sprayberry of Heflin.

A district attorney in east Alabama says he has begun a preliminary investigation into the campaign finances of Republican state Senate candidate Tim Sprayberry of Heflin.

District Attorney E. Paul Jones said Friday it appears that there are campaign contributions that were not reported. He said it also appears campaign funds were spent on personal expenses.

Jones said several complaints prompted the investigation, and it is ongoing.

A state senator who was in charge of a committee that drew Alabama's senate districts has denied that the process was intended to create more Republican districts.

Republican Sen. Gerald Dial of Lineville testified in federal court Thursday that his only goals going into the redistricting process were to prevent incumbents from facing each other, to avoid reducing the percentage of minorities in majority black districts, and to protect communities of interest.

Ala. Senate Votes To Strengthen Right-To-Work Law

Republican Sen. Gerald Dial sponsored the bill to put Alabama's right-to-work law into the state constitution.

The Alabama Senate has approved a proposed constitutional amendment that would put Alabama's right-to-work law into the state constitution.


The Senate's 21-10 vote Thursday sent the legislation for the House. If passed by the House, it will require approval by Alabama voters in next year's general election.
