Winter storm causes travel hazards, power outages, price gouging concerns

Residents in much of northern and central Alabama are digging out this morning after a winter storm dumped a substantial amount of snow on the region.

Roads are impassable in more than ten Alabama counties. The heaviest snow fell north of Birmingham – forecasters say some areas received upwards of ten inches of snow accumulation.

Paige Colburn is the emergency management officer for the Huntsville – Madison County EMA. She says they’re hoping to avoid a repeat of last Friday, when stuck and abandoned cars caused major problems for emergency crews.

Winter Weather, Road Conditions and Price Gouging

North Alabama is experiencing some of the heaviest snow it’s seen in four years.  Precipitation started falling around noon as counties remain in a winter storm watch until midnight as areas could see four-to-six inches.

Alabama AG Warns Of Danger Of Fraud After Isaac

Alabama Attorney General Luther Strange warns of the danger of fraud after Tropical Storm Isaac

As Tropical Storm Isaac neared the coast of Alabama and nearby states, Attorney General Luther Strange warned his office would be on the lookout for those who might exploit the situation by committing fraud. When Gov. Robert Bentley declared a state of emergency Sunday he triggered the state's laws cracking down on price gouging and looting. The anti-looting law was adopted after last spring's devastating April tornadoes. It makes looting a crime and provides stiff penalties for those who exploit a tragedy like a hurricane or tornado.
