Pelham City Council

Another Alabama city is planning to form its own municipal school system.

Members of the Pelham City Council voted Monday night to establish their own board of education.

The move is the first step toward breaking away from Shelby County's school system and establishing a city school system.

Pelham council member Karyl Rice says the city has all the resources it needs to be a top school system in the state.

The decision comes just weeks after neighboring Alabaster began its first year of classes with a new city system.
