Alabama is answering a call for help from its neighbor to the Southeast.

Hurricane Matthew is expected to hit the Florida coast very soon. In anticipation of the damage, Florida made a request for state assistance from Alabama.

Governor Robert Bentley approved a notion that will send Alabama National Guard helicopter and pilot to Marana, Arizona to assist with protecting the U.S. border with Mexico.

This is the second time this year that Alabama National Guard has sent assistance to the Southwest Border Team.

Alabama Sen. Jeff Sessions is taking on a new position as chairman of Don Trump's advisory committee on national security.

Trump named the Mobile Republican to the post yesterday. A release from the Trump campaign says he's honored to have Sessions as a member of his team.

The announcement comes a week after Sessions endorsed the New York businessman for the GOP nomination for president.

A large National Guard training center is planned for north Alabama.

   Gov. Robert Bentley and state Sen. Arthur Orr of Decatur announced that the training center will be developed on the old site of the Lurleen B. Wallace Developmental Center in Decatur. The facility was operated by the state Department of Mental Health until it closed a decade ago. The Department of Mental Health turned over the deed to the National Guard on Thursday.

Alabama National Guard Investigated for Improper Travel

The Alabama National Guard has launched an investigation into a recent deployment from Birmingham to England to determine whether guard personnel improperly took relatives along on military aircraft.

The Birmingham News reports Berryhill has confirmed the investigation. The guard declined to elaborate on the nature of the allegations.

At issue are members of the 117th Air Refueling Wing based at Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport.
