An attorney representing a white Alabama police officer charged with the fatal shooting of a black man is hoping for a new venue for the trial.

The lawyer for Montgomery police officer Aaron Smith filed a motion last week seeking to move the upcoming trial. He argues the publicity of the case and protests over the shooting death of 58-year-old Montgomery man Greg Gunn would make a fair trial difficult to obtain in the state capital.

An Alabama judge says there’s enough probable cause to let a grand jury review the case against a white police officer in Montgomery charged with fatally shooting a black man last month.

Officer Aaron Smith was arrested and charged with murder less than a week after police say he fatally shot 58-year-old Greg Gunn in February.

Selma police have arrested a man after three people were shot in Selma’s Oasis Tabernacle Church yesterday.

26 year old James Junior Minter is being held without bond in the Dallas County Jail. He’s accused of shooting his former girlfriend, their 1-month-old son, and the church pastor during services yesterday. Authorities believe Minter was most likely upset about a recent breakup and visitation issues with his son.

The 24-year-old woman and her 1-month-old baby were both rushed to Birmingham for medical treatment. Both are currently in stable condition.

Montgomery Police say they're ramping up downtown patrols after complaints of underage drinking and other inappropriate conduct near the riverfront entertainment district.

Public Safety Director J. Christopher Murphy says officers will patrol the area on bicycles and marked patrol cars, and undercover officers will also canvass the area at night.

Montgomery City Council passed an ordinance last year to establish a downtown entertainment district and some say underage visitors have started bringing their own liquor and loitering in the area.
