Union Groups to Announce Mercedes Partnership

Union officials from Germany and with the United Auto Workers have scheduled a press conference Friday to discuss their efforts to gain labor representation for workers at the Mercedes factory in Alabama.

The event coincides with a visit from Michael Brecht, the top labor representative on the supervisory board of Mercedes parent Daimler AG, and Joerg Hofmann, the vice president of IG Metall, the union representing most auto workers in Germany.

Ala. Mercedes-Benz Plant Notifying Workers About TB

The Mercedes-Benz car factory in Vance says it's working with health officials and contacting employees after a worker was discovered with an active case of tuberculosis.

The Mercedes-Benz car factory in Alabama says it's working with health officials and contacting employees after a worker was discovered with an active case of tuberculosis.

The Alabama Department of Public Health said Friday a worker at the plant in Vance had tested positive for the infectious pulmonary disease.

The factory has about 3,400 employees, and the company isn't saying where the infected person works. But Mercedes says it's notifying all employees about the discovery.

The four-day event began this weekend and runs through Tuesday.

A major union is trying to organize workers at Alabama's Mercedes-Benz plant near Tuscaloosa.


The Tuscaloosa News reports that the United Auto Workers has created a website -- uawvance.com -- targeting workers at the plant in Vance.


Al.com reports that the UAW is trying to organize workers at the 3,000-employee plant in an effort supported by the German union IG Metall.
