Birmingham Board Approves Plan to Close Schools

The Birmingham school board has approved a cost savings plan that calls for closing seven schools and laying off 90 employees.

WBRC-TV reports (http://bit.ly/10DrSJj) that 19 employees in the central office and 71 workers across the system will be laid off.


The schools that will be closed are Center Street Middle School; Councill K-5; Daniel Payne Middle School; Hemphill Pre-K-5; Lewis Elementary School; Norwood K-5; and North Roebuck Elementary School.

Concerns Raised About Birmingham School Closings

Parents and teachers are expressing concerns about plans to close seven schools and lay off 133 workers in Birmingham City Schools.

At a Monday night meeting, community members said they feared the consequences of one aspect of the plan: Consolidating some seventh- and eighth-grade students with high school students.


Stephannie Huey says she's taught at the middle school and high school level, and doesn't think the two groups will mix well. She said middle school students would be exposed to more sexual activity, drugs and cigarettes.
