Lessons From Cats

You may think of your cat as your pet, or your friend, but teacher? Turns out you can learn a lot about life by watching your cat (so pay attention)!

The month of June is one a lot of folks really look forward to. For some it means the start of summer vacation. Churches are booked every weekend for June weddings.

But for animal shelters, it means more cats will be surrendered this month than during any other time of the year.

That's why June is designated as Adopt-a-Shelter-Cat Month.

More Pet Food Recalls

Once again salmonella is in the headlines as tainted pet food is posing a threat to both animals and their owners.

Every year there are recalls of pet food, often due to the danger of salmonella contamination.

Within the last couple of weeks several pet food brands have issued recalls, all for dry pet foods manufactured by Diamond Pet Foods at its plant in South Carolina. Sampling of the product revealed the presence of salmonella.

Genesis Awards 2012

The 26th Annual Genesis Awards have been handed out, and you can watch to see who receives the honors for helping improve conditions for our animal friends.

The Genesis Awards began in 1986 when Broadway actress Gretchen Wyler decided that she could help animals by recognizing members of the news and entertainment media who were spotlighting issues that would increase public awareness and compassion toward animals.

Tuscaloosa, Alabama – It was one year ago when tornadoes tore through Alabama, killing more than two hundred people. The Alabama Public Radio news team revisited many of the people and places you heard about in the hours and days following the storm. This includes Alberta, and Phil Campbell, which were both hard hit by the weather. APR also ventured to Greensburg, Kansas, which pioneered many of the "green" post-tornado rebuilding ideas Tuscaloosa may use in the future.
