Alabama Releases Civil Rights Tourism App

The Civil Rights Trail app includes sites in several cities, including Birmingham.

The Alabama Tourism Department has introduced its first app for smart phones.


State Tourism Director Lee Sentell said the app is for the Alabama Civil Rights Trail. He said it provides a convenient way for visitors to explore the people, places and events surrounding the fight for equal rights. The app includes sites in several cities, including Birmingham, Montgomery, Selma and Tuskegee. It also includes an interactive timeline and a calendar of events happening in Alabama this year.

22 Alabama Cities to Hold April Walking Tours

Alabama's Tourism Department says 22 towns across the state will participate in this year's April Walking Tours.

The Alabama Tourism Department says 22 towns across the state will participate in the department's April Walking Tours.

The department's Brian Jones says more than 1,700 tours have been done since the program started 10 years ago. The free, hour-long tours of historic districts and courthouse squares will start at 10 a.m. on April 6, 13, 20 and 27.

People can go to Facebook and start voting on Alabama's best barbecue restaurant.


The Alabama Tourism Department is sponsoring the competition as part of its Year of Alabama Food. State Tourism Director Lee Sentell says barbecue is part of Alabama's heritage, and there has always been a debate about which restaurant is best.


The competition is in brackets like the NCAA basketball tournament and 32 restaurants are starting. Voting starts Monday, and voting in each bracket lasts for three days. Voting for restaurants in the Final Four will be April 1-5.

Ala Tourism Posters Boast 4NAROW for Football

Tourism officials are offering new posters to mark the state of Alabama's run of four consecutive college football titles.

Small posters that say "4NAROW" will be available starting Thursday at state welcome centers and tourism offices.


The mini-posters resemble Alabama car tags and refer to the consecutive Bowl Championship Series crowns won by the University of Alabama and Auburn University.

New Book to Feature Alabama Dishes

Alabama's tourism agency has a new book for people who love food.


The Alabama Tourism Department is offering a 128-page, hardcover book titled "Alabama Food" that goes on sale Dec. 3.


The book features more than 225 dishes from restaurants around the state. It's based on a tourism promotion that highlights Alabama's home-grown restaurants.


The book features food products from around the state. It has sections devoted to farmers markets, farms, food festivals, and wines and craft beers.

Alabama Cities Offering Ghostly Tours in October

Several Alabama cities are planning ghostly events during the month of October.

The state Tourism Department says Athens will hold its annual Historic Haunts Walk each Tuesday night in October. Demopolis has its Tombigbee Haints and Haunts tours on Oct. 26-27. Florence is planning its 10th annual Haunted History at the Shoals Ghost Walk nightly from Oct. 19-31. Huntsville will conduct ghost walking tours on Friday and Saturday nights in October and the Maple Hill Cemetery Stroll on Oct. 14.
