Stats Show 2012 Was Mixed For Alabama Farmers

Alabama farmers experienced a mixed bag of results in 2012.

The Alabama Farmers Federation says federal statistics show the state's corn production increased by 51 percent in 2013, with farmers harvesting an average of 148 bushels an acre.

Soybean production increased 21 percent, and Alabama growers harvesting nearly 100,000 more acres than 2012.

Things weren't as good for cotton and peanut crops, however.

Cotton yields dropped 26 percent while peanut yields declined 44 percent.

Ala. Secretary Of State Joining Farmers Federation

Secretary of State Beth Chapman is taking a political consulting job with the Alabama Farmers Federation when she resigns her public office at the end of the month.

Secretary of State Beth Chapman is taking a political consulting job with the Alabama Farmers Federation when she resigns her public office at the end of the month.


Federation officials say Chapman will start her new job Aug. 1 and work through the 2014 election.


The federation's director of government relations, Brian Hardin, says the organization has a long-standing relationship with Chapman, including endorsing her for state auditor and then two races for secretary of state.

Ala. Farmers Organization Elects New President

A fifth-generation Chilton County farmer has been elected president of the Alabama Farmers Federation.

Officials Monday announced Jimmy Parnell, of Stanton, will serve a two-year term as president.

Officials say 48-year-old Parnell served on the organization's board of directors between 1999 and 2008, and was chairman of the group's Young Farmers Committee in 1997.

Parnell raises cattle and runs a timber business with his father and two younger brothers. He was named logger of the year by the Alabama Forestry Association in 2006.

3 Seek Presidency of Ala Farmers Federation

Three people are vying to replace Jerry Newby as president of the Alabama Farmers Federation.


The Tuscaloosa News (http://bit.ly/V8Boze ) reports that state Rep. Richard Lindsey of Centre; Jimmy Parnell of Maplesville; and Ricky Wiggins of Covington County are candidates in the election.


The vote will be held Monday during the group's annual meeting in Montgomery.


The 65-year-old Newby announced earlier this year he wouldn't seek re-election. He served seven two-year terms.
