Mobile, AL – Dozens of wildfires flared up over the weekend in counties across Southwest Alabama. Officials say Saturday's blazes were fanned by strong winds and dry weather. More than 20 brush fires were reported in Mobile County alone, but no injuries were reported. At least one of the fires did damage buildings. Near McIntosh in Washington County, a fire also burned a mobile home, another structure and a vehicle, along with 18 acres of land. Two other large fires were reported in Baldwin County, and one was reported in West Mobile. State foresters say the threat of wildfires will not be reduced until the state receives adequate rainfall. They're also worried that an abundance of trees blown down by Hurricane Ivan has produced an oversupply of fuel for fires.
