Wachovia Continues Birmingham Layoffs

By Alabama Public Radio

Birmingham, AL – Wachovia is continuing to layoff workers in Birmingham. Wachovia bought Birmingham-based SouthTrust Corporation in June for almost $15 billion. The company said then it would eliminate a total of 4,300 jobs from the combined companies. Since then, almost 1,200 people have been laid off in Birmingham. Wachovia cut more than 350 positions from SouthTrust earlier this week, and a memo to employees says an additional 100 workers will receive their notices early next week. A spokesperson for the two banks says the latest positions will be eliminated by the end of this year from SouthTrust's downtown headquarters and from a Homewood training center. Wachovia told SouthTrust workers that most will know by March if they'll stay on with the company.
