Tuscaloosa PD Video Latest...Alabama remembers its Veterans

An Alabama death row inmate wants the state Supreme Court to review his case. Bill Kuenzel argues jurors never heard critical evidence that could have proven his innocence. He claims prosecutors withheld details in the 1987 slaying of a Sylacauga convenience store clerk. A witness, who placed Kuenzel at the scene, initially told the grand jury she couldn't see who was at the store that night. A man who claimed to be Kuenzel’s accomplice owned a shotgun similar to the one that killed clerk Linda Offord. An appeals court ruled the inmate missed a deadline to raise the claim…

Alabama has been showering U.S. Servicemen and women with southern hospitality ahead of Veterans Day. Wounded veterans are honored this week for the annual Heroes Week in Huntsville. The Semper Fi Community Tasks force sponsors the weeklong event to celebrate veterans. The purpose of the event is to show the nation’s appreciation to those who never received a big “Welcome Back.” David Bonwit is co-chairman of Semper Fi Heroes Week. He says the support from the community makes all the difference…

“The generosity of our community not just in Huntsville but across Alabama has been just overwhelming to them because they don’t know what to expect when they get here and the warmth of our community has just overwhelmed them with that southern hospitality that we all seem to know so well.”

David Bonwit says he appreciates the support from the community. He encourages all to follow the week and continue to recognize veterans in honor of the holiday.

Two veterans are being honored today by the Mobile Bay Area Veterans Day Commission. Jim Jeffries and Thad W. Allen will be recognized during the commission’s Veterans Day luncheon at the Fort Whiting Armory. Army veteran Jeffries will be named vet of the year. And, retired Coast Guard Admiral Allen will be named patriot of the year. Wayne Sirmon is with the Mobile Bay Area Veterans Day Commission. He says there’s also a parade today for Veteran’s Day…

“I am much more excited when I go down the parade route and I see the veterans who have put on some of their old uniforms and are proud to stand and be recognized.”

Sirmon says there will also be various activities going on throughout the day in Mobile to honor veterans.

The Tuscaloosa Police Department identified the three officers involved in an incident that went viral on the internet. Officers James Kent, Phillip Champion, and Gregory Pimm are on paid leave while an internal investigation is made into Sunday morning’s arrest of three University of Alabama students. The officers are seen on video using a taser and a nightstick to subdue them. The three young people were arrested on charges of harassment, obstruction of justice, and resisting arrest. Tuscaloosa Police says it’s gathering interviews and video, including body cameras on the officers.
