Montgomery, AL – State Troopers estimate 14 people may be killed in roadway accidents during the 78-hour Christmas travel period. Public Safety Director Colonel Mike Coppage says troopers will increase patrols and will work with county and local law enforcement agencies to set up sobriety checkpoints. He says officers will make extra efforts to find drivers who appear to be impaired by alcohol or drugs. Last year, 18 people died in traffic accidents over the Christmas weekend. Sixteen of those deaths occurred on rural roads. The Christmas Holiday travel period began Thursday evening at six o'clock and will end at midnight Sunday.
