Strange Wants Senate Seat, Not Appointment

Luther Strange
Alabama Attorney General Luther Strange

Alabama Attorney General Luther Strange says he isn’t looking for an appointment to Jeff Sessions’ senate seat. But he does plan to run for the office in a special election that may not be held until 2018.

Alabama’s junior U.S. Senator Jeff Sessions was recently tapped by President-elect Donald Trump to serve as his Attorney General. That leaves a vacant seat that lots of Alabama politicians are clamoring to fill.

U.S. Representatives Robert Aderholt, Mike Rogers and Mo Brooks and state Senators Del Marsh and Arthur Orr have all said they’ll seek an appointment from Governor Bentley or run for the office.

Luther Strange is the first prospective candidate who’s said he’s not interested in an appointment. But Strange tells the Weekly Standard he’d be a good fit to replace Sessions, citing similarities between their views on immigration and energy policy.

Strange has served as Alabama’s Attorney General since 2011. Earlier this month, he took over as chairman of the Republican Attorneys General Association.
