Dec 27, 2012

GREENVILLE, Ala. (AP) — The state has confirmed the first death in Alabama linked to the severe weather outbreak on Christmas. Emergency management officials say an 81-year-old man was injured when a tree fell on his home in Georgiana on Tuesday night. Officials say the man was freed from the wreckage and taken to a hospital. He died on Wednesday. The National Weather Service says at least four confirmed tornadoes hit south Alabama on Christmas day, and that number could still increase. Forecasters have determined that EF-2 twisters stuck midtown Mobile and Pike County. They say the Mobile storm was the strongest, with winds up to 137 mph. The weather service says a pair of EF-1 tornadoes struck Marengo County. In all, twisters left damage along a 32-mile path. Damage assessments are continuing.
