State to close some license offices, parks, Hillary Clinton coming to Alabama

The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency says it is pulling examiners out of 31 part-time satellite driver’s license offices because of budget cuts.

The agency made the announcement today. The examiners currently travel to the locations during some days of the week.

The agency said the change will save money on travel costs.

Secretary Spencer Collier says the impact on citizens will be lessened because of online renewals and other options.

The announcement came on the eve of the start of the fiscal year that brings $82 million in general fund budget cuts.

Five State Parks, Bladon Springs, Paul Grist, Chickasaw, Florala and Roland Cooper will close October 15th.

Presidential candidate Hillary Clinton is making a stop in Alabama next month. APR student reporter Parker Branton has more on her visit to the yellowhammer state.
Democratic front runner Hillary Clinton will speak at the Alabama Democratic Conference semi-annual convention in Birmingham on October 17th.
She will be speaking to the black caucus of the Alabama Democratic Party. The conference will be held at the Hyatt Regency Birmingham in Hoover.

Tuscaloosa foodies could be in paradise this weekend. That's when the Druid City Garden Project holds its fourth annual Garden Party.

The event pairs chefs from eight Tuscaloosa restaurants with fourteen area farmers. They'll join forces to produce a variety of unique dishes. All three of Tuscaloosa’s breweries will be serving beer as well.

Lindsay Turner is the executive director of the Druid City Garden Project. She says proceeds from the event will benefit a great cause.

“Druid City Garden Project is a non-profit organization here in Tuscaloosa. We’re a school garden education program. We are now in seven elementary schools across the Tuscaloosa city and Tuscaloosa County school systems. We reach over 2600 students every single week of the school year.”

The Garden Party will be held Sunday evening at Smith Hall on the University of Alabama campus. Tickets are available online at DruidCityGardenProject.org.
