Washington, D.C. – U.S. Senator Jeff Sessions says he wants a plan from the Federal Emergency Management Agency to significantly reduce fraud and to increase accountability. Sessions and Congressman Jo Bonner say they plan to contact FEMA Director Michael Brown for an explanation of how disaster relief money is distributed. They say they're concerned that fraudulent claims were paid out by FEMA. Reports say the agency awarded disaster aid to areas that were unaffected by disasters, including some places in Alabama. A Florida Representative plans to introduce legislation to modify how the government approves disaster claims. And a House committee that oversees FEMA also plans to investigate and scrutinize the payments.
