Senate budget chairmen swap committees for upcoming session, Alabama vs. LSU Preview

Nov 6, 2015

The two Alabama Senate budget chairmen are swapping committees for the upcoming session.

Sen. Trip Pittman of Montrose will head the general fund budget committee. Sen Arthur Orr of Decatur will take over as Education Trust Fund budget chairman.

The Senate Committee on Assignments announced the change on Friday.

Orr says he believes it is healthy to have fresh eyes on the state budgets. Pittman says he is looking forward to a new challenge.

Alabama government has two budgets. One funds education. The general fund pays for other functions such as Medicaid, prisons, child welfare service and mental health.

Legislators spent much of this year struggling with a general fund shortfall.

Music lovers in New York City's Carnegie Hall will be hearing music inspired by Alabama's civil rights movement.

The concert hall is hosting a performance this Saturday of a Montgomery based musical piece composed by Mohammed Fairouz.**

“Deep Rivers” is a set of songs commissioned by ClefWorks and the JK Lowder Family Foundation that commemorates the Selma to Montgomery Voting Rights March.

Leah Stephens is a spokeswoman forClefWorks. She says says this isn’t the first time a piece from her group has been performed in Carnegie Hall.

“We are thrilled it is actually the second piece ClefWorks has had a connection to that has been played at Carnegie Hall. We are all about encouraging music particularly chamber music and the creation of new music.”

ClefWorks will be hosting concerts in the Montgomery area in the upcoming Holiday months.

AP’s Number seven Alabama welcomes Number four LSU to Tuscaloosa for an SEC West showdown Saturday night.  The Tigers are undefeated at 7-0 while the Crimson Tide is 7-1.

Coach Nick Saban says in order for his team to defeat LSU, they need to focus on containing sophomore running back and Heisman front-runner, Leonard Fournette…

“I think Leonard Fournette is probably in my opinion, I haven’t seen all the players but he’s as dominant as any player in the country in terms of the way he plays and what he’s capable of doing as a running back, both running the football and as a receiver.”

Fournette has more than 1300 and 15 touchdowns on the ground this season and averages 7.7 yards per carry.  Kickoff is set for 7:15 p.m. on CBS.
