Montgomery, AL – Secretary of State Nancy Worley says racism and politics are behind a bill that would take the supervisor of voter registration out of her office and put the job under an appointed board. County voter registrars who are pushing the bill say Worley's claims are not true. They say they want a change because she is difficult to work with. They say she doesn't provide adequate training, and they say she waits days to return phone calls. The bill is sponsored by state Senator Gerald Dial. It won approval Thursday from a Senate committee and will now go to the full Senate for consideration. Worley says some people are upset that she appointed a black man to serve as acting director of voter registration. And she says critics also don't like that a Democrat is serving as the state's top election official.
