Safe Haven Law Gets Tragic Publicity

By Alabama Public Radio

Birmingham, AL – Jefferson County Commissioner Bettye Fine Collins says she's researching ways to publicize the state's Safe Haven Law. The law gives parents 72 hours to leave an unwanted and unharmed baby at a hospital emergency room without fear of prosecution. Collins made the statements after helping put together a funeral service for a baby who was found dead in a thrift store. Thrift store workers found the baby in March. She was in a box among donated items. Investigators have traced the box to Saint Clair County, but they haven't identified the baby's mother. Authorities say the baby girl was born alive and at full term. They have not released a cause of death. Store workers named the girl Angel Grace. She'll be buried Thursday in the Garden of Eden at Jefferson Memorial Gardens. That section of the cemetery is designated for children.
