Riley Tells BJCC "No Support Without Plan"

By Alabama Public Radio

Birmingham, AL – Governor Riley says the state will not consider contributing money toward a Birmingham domed convention and sports facility unless area officials agree on a financing plan. Riley and his chief of staff, Toby Roth, say they've talked to officials connected to the stadium project. That includes state lawmakers from Jefferson County, officials from the Birmingham Jefferson Convention Complex and the Birmingham Regional Chamber of Commerce. The BJCC board is trying to put together a financing plan for the 65,000-seat domed facility. It would feature a convention complex and entertainment district in downtown Birmingham. The facility would cost about $567 million. Riley says no one has brought him a financing plan approved by all the key officials. And he says the state won't support a plan that's in a "state of flux."
