Jackson, AL – The mayor of Jackson says the city could be selling beer by the Fourth of July. Jackson residents voted Tuesday to allow the sale of alcohol in the city limits. Supporters of legalization say alcohol sales will help Jackson's economy. But opponents say the sales will just cause problems. The paper-mill town of about 5,400 people has been dry since Prohibition. The vote does apply only to the city of Jackson. The rest of Clarke County will remain dry. Voter turnout in Jackson Tuesday exceeded that of the past two presidential elections, while officials say the vote polarized the city. More than 1,100 people voted for the legalization of alcohol sales, while almost 900 people voted against the measure.
