Questions Over Important Bills

By Alabama Public Radio

Montgomery, AL – There's just one meeting day left in the legislature's regular session. And, there are still some question marks. There's no definitive answer just yet on teacher pay raises, an 80 million dollar appropriation for the state docks, and 20-point-five million dollars for prisons. Governor Bob Riley says all options remain open. Democrats support a six percent pay raise for teachers and support workers. The raises would start October First and affect about 100-thousand teachers and other employees of public schools and two-year colleges. The raises would cost nearly 185 million dollars a year. Riley favors a four percent raise, saying the state cannot afford a six percent increase.
