Police Look For Tutu Event Organizer

By Alabama Public Radio

Montgomery, AL – Police in Montgomery are looking for Reverend James Webb. He organized an appearance by South African Archbishop Desmond Tutu last year, but it was cancelled under mysterious circumstances. Now authorities want Webb on a charge of first degree theft. He's accused of taking money from a Montgomery law firm by endorsing and cashing more than 23-thousand dollars in checks. The money was supposed to be spent on advertising for the event. Webb organized a fund-raising appearance for Tutu in Montgomery last June but canceled it on the day it was supposed to happen. Webb said Tuta had a family emergency that required him to return home. But a Tutu spokesperson said later there was no emergency. She said logistical and financial problems prompted the cancellation.
