Phenix City Expected to Grow

By Alabama Public Radio

Phenix City, AL – Right across the Alabama state line in Columbus, Georgia sits Fort Benning. Fort Benning is projected to be one of the nation's top job gainers as a result of the base closure process that became official last week. The Army's Armor School and Center will be moving from Fort Knox, Kentucky, to Fort Benning, the two-state area is expected to inherit more than 28-thousand new soldiers, contractors and families. That is just under a ten percent overall increase. Phenix City's population is 29-thousand. If calculated, the six-county region around Fort Benning is inheriting another Phenix City, and the city is estimating it will get as many as three-thousand of those people.
