Parties Vying for Same-Sex Marriage Ban
By Alabama Public Radio
Montgomery, AL – Republicans in the state Legislature say Democrats are trying to steal key items in their agenda, particularly a proposed constitutional amendment to ban gay marriages. House Minority Leader Auburn Representative Mike Hubbard says Republicans will not let Democrats steal the GOP's conservative ideals. But House Majority Leader Carbon Hill Representative Ken Guin says some Republicans think they have a "hot line to heaven." Hubbard and other Republican leaders complained that the Democrats listed the gay marriage ban as their priority after Republicans had included the proposed amendment on the GOP agenda for the session. Republican Senate Minority Leader Jabo Waggoner of Vestavia Hils also says Democratic leaders were responsible for a same-sex marriage ban amendment dying in the House last session. A version of the marriage amendment that's sponsored by a Selma Democratic Representative will be the first item considered tomorrow by the House Constitution and Elections committee.
