North Alabama water troubles, Gov Bob Riley back in the witness stand

Things got testy when former Alabama Governor Bob Riley took the witness stand again in Speaker Mike Hubbard’s ethics trial. The prosecutors tried to keep Riley from going on too long with his answers. The former governor accused Matt Hart from asking questions out of context. The prosecutions wants Riley to help them build the case that Hubbard illegally used his position as Alabama House Speaker to help himself and his businesses. There are twenty three felony counts against him. Hubbard says he did nothing wrong.

Officials are delaying the distribution of bottled water in two Northern Alabama counties after tap water was chemically contaminated. APR’s MacKenzie Bates has the story...

The Fire Departments from Lawrence and Morgan counties were going to hand out bottled water yesterday. However the plans were pushed back because of a delivery delay. The West Morgan-East Limestone Water and Sewer Authority warned residents last week not to drink their tap water. The authority issued the warning about two chemicals in water from the Tennessee River. The authority's warning goes further than guidance from the Environmental Protection Agency. The state says there's no water crisis in the area.

Alabama Secretary of State John Merrill is trying to boost voter registration numbers in north Alabama. There will be a voter registration and ID drive today at the Leighton Town Hall today in Colbert County. Alabama residents must be registered to vote and present a valid form of ID that proves they live in the state to cast a ballot. With this drive, Merrill believes that more voters will turn out and continue to see a rise of voting in the state.

“We have the largest number of voters in the history of the state today. We have three-point one million registered voters in the state of Alabama. We also had one point two-five million participate in primary one March first which is the largest number in the history of the state.”

Merrill also believes that the younger voters will continue to register and have an active voice in the voting process. The Voting registration will begin today at 10 AM at Leighton Town Hall.

A deadline is looming for anyone looking to set up a charter school in Alabama. Today is the last day the Alabama Charter School Commission will accept letters of intent on opening new charter classrooms. Supporters of charter schools can voice their interest in one of two instances. If an individual group wants to start up a charter school in a school district that isn’t setting up one of its own. Or, a school district can apply if they were turned down earlier. After this phase, an August deadline looms to open a charter school in 2017.
