Most Legislators Support Ban on Same-Sex Marriages

By Alabama Public Radio

Montgomery, AL – A new survey of state legislators finds great support for a constitutional amendment banning same-sex marriages. 91 percent of Senators and 74 percent of Representatives took part in the survey. Meanwhile, 94 percent of responding Senators and 81 percent of responding Representatives say they do want the Legislature to approve the constitutional amendment. The other legislators were either opposed or undecided. Republican legislators say their goal is to send the amendment to voters for approval in the general election in November 2006. The Republican caucuses in the state House and Senate announced in November that a constitutional ban on same-sex marriages would be one of their priorities for the legislative session that starts in February.
