More Aerospace jobs for Mobile, No cigar for Rolando

Today’s opening of the Paris Air Show included good news for the Mobile area. Hutchinson Corporation announced it will open an Aerospace Manufacturing Center of Excellence in Mobile. The facility will serve the region’s growing aerospace industry, including the new Airbus manufacturing plant. The center is expected to start operations later this year. No word on how many jobs this will mean for the Alabama gulf coast. The company specializes in improving customer comfort and safety.

Tuscaloosa's Deontay Wilder defended his boxing title over the weekend, but Alabama may be the big winner. Alabama fight fans got to see the state's very first Las Vegas style boxing event over the weekend. Casey Sears is the Vice Chair of the Alabama Athletic Commission. He says hosting an event like this has paved the way for similar matches to be held in Alabama...

We have already been contacted by Don King, he has requested a license to promote fights in the state of Alabama, the WBC is coming back and they will bring other titles, other title fights here they have already agreed to do that.

Wilder is the third Alabamian to hold the WBC Heavyweight title along with Joe Louis and Evander Holyfield. Sears says the Mixed Martial Arts community is also planning on bringing some major events to Alabama in 2016.

Republican presidential hopeful Rick Santorum has Montgomery on his list of campaign stops. The former U.S. senator from Pennsylvania will meet today with employees of a company that makes tents and backpacks. Santorum was a runner-up to Mitt Romney in 2012. His Alabama visit brings him back to the site of one of his successes four years ago. Santorum won the 2012 GOP primary in Alabama. During that campaign, Santorum visited Tuscaloosa’s Dreamland Barbeque. You’ll find a link to that story at apr.org.

No George Halas award for former Crimson Tide player Rolando McClain. The current member of the Dallas Cowboys lost the George Halas Award to former Saints player Scott Gleason. The Professional Football Writers Association gives out the Halas award to an NFL player who overcomes great adversity to achieve success on the field. McClain was arrested three times and later retired from the Baltimore Ravens before finding success with the Dallas Cowboys. Association spokesman Howard Balzer says McClain got his vote…

“Well, his story is pretty amazing. I mean, most wondered if he’s every play again in the NFL. There were a couple of starts and stops with the Ravens, where he was going to make a comeback and it didn’t work out.”
