Montgomery Waterways Pass Flood Stage

By Alabama Public Radio

Montgomery, AL – Residents in a southwest Montgomery neighborhood are keeping close tabs on Catoma Creek after it began spilling its banks and sending flood waters into homes. The National Weather Service says the creek is expected to crest around 7 p.m. Tuesday at about 27 feet. The creek's flood stage is 20 feet. The Lower Tallapoosa River is also expected to crest near 29 feet Tuesday and will fall below flood stage, which is 25 feet, early Wednesday. Despite a weekend of heavy rain, meteorologists say water levels for the Alabama, Cahaba and Tallapoosa Rivers are expected to remain below the established flood stage. Meanwhile, forecasters surveyed areas of Montgomery Monday that were damaged during Sunday's storms. They concluded that straight line winds, not a tornado, snapped 13 power poles near the Deercreek subdivision in east Montgomery. Several funnel clouds were spotted across Montgomery County, but meteorologists again say they found no evidence of any tornado touchdowns.
