Man Cashes in More Than One Million Pennies

By Alabama Public Radio

Flomaton, AL – Edmond Knowles of Flomaton has set a new world record. He cashed in more than one million, 380-thousand pennies this week. He's been keeping the pennies for nearly four-decades, collecting more than 13 thousand dollars worth of them. He says he started keeping the pennies in 1966, and he stored them in three-20 gallon barrels in his garage. The barrels weighed four and-a-half tons. Officials with Coinstar Incorporated sent an armored vehicle to collect the change, which was counted at Escambia County Bank. Knowles broke the previous penny record set by an Ohio man last year. He had collected slightly more than one million pennies.
