Legislators Seek Money Records from Alabama State

deseretnews.com

Three legislative leaders on education issues have asked Alabama State University for records of all contracts and payments to public officials or their immediate families.

The chairmen of the House and Senate education appropriations committees, Rep. Jay Love of Montgomery and Sen. Trip Pittman of Montrose, made the request along with the chairman of the Senate Education Committee, Dick Brewbaker of Montgomery. WSFA-TV (http://bit.ly/TVp08T ) reports that the legislators want to reassure the public of the transparency of expenditures at state educational institutions.

The request comes in the wake of the Alabama State trustees placing the university's new president, Joseph Silver, on administrative leave. Silver said the action came after he questioned some contracts. The trustees have also ordered an audit of the finances at the Montgomery university.
