Incinerator Will Begin Destroying New Weapons

By Alabama Public Radio

Anniston, AL – Crews are adjusting some machinery at the Chemical Agent Disposal Facility in Anniston. That would allow the facility to begin destroying a new category of weapons -- 155 millimeter artillery shells. Spokesperson Mike Abrams says that could begin this week. He also says the facility will begin to retool for a new agent campaign toward the end of the year. The incinerator has destroyed more than 56 thousand weapons since the process began. It also has destroyed nearly 600 thousand pounds of the sarin nerve agent.
