Montgomery, AL – The House Judiciary Committee has passed a bill that would require convicted sex offenders to register with the local sheriff within seven days of moving into a community. The current law requires convicted sex offenders to register within 30 days of relocating. The bill also would make it a felony for a sex offender to fail to register with a sheriff's department. It also would require convicted sex offenders to notify the sheriff about the location of his or her job, which is not currently required.
