Heat Pushes Up Energy Bills

By Alabama Public Radio

Undated – Common sense would suggest as it gets hotter outside, power bills will increase. That is indeed the case as a summer heat wave has been moving across the state. Alabama Power says the average summer bill for the months of June, July, August and September is expected to be 104-dollars. That's more than usual, and air conditioning is the primary culprit. A spokesperson with the South Alabama Electric Cooperative says running the air conditioner during hot summer days could account for up to 50 percent or more of a person's total energy bill. Alabama Power is recommending setting the air conditioning temperature to 78 degrees to save power and money.
