Community Considers Economy and Environment

By Alabama Public Radio

Linden, AL – A community in Morengo County must weigh environmental questions with economic improvement. British company Global Cellulose Systems wants to build a mill in Linden that would turn a bamboo-like plant into pulp. The plant is called Arundo donax, and the company is hoping to get agreements from area farmers to grow it. However, the plant is considered to be one of the most invasive on Earth and could seriously impact the local habitat. The 530 million dollar facility could employ as many as 500 workers. The company will host a meeting with area farmers Thursday at Linden Baptist Church.
