Child Care Advocates Plan Protests
By Alabama Public Radio
Montgomery, AL – There will be candlelight vigils in several Alabama cities tonight to protest budget cuts in the state's child care system. The Department of Human Resources is planning to reduce some state-funded child care. Child care advocates say that will force some daycare centers to close and others to release employees. They say the decision could affect 12-thousand children already in daycare and another 15-thousand on waiting lists. Department of Human Resources spokesperson Mike Gibson says the agency has not yet established its spending priorities. The department has about 38-thousand children enrolled in child care.
