Montgomery, AL – Tuscaloosa, Montgomery, and Limestone counties are among several counties and cities that would have to increase their property taxes under a bill being considered in the state House. The House Education Finance and Appropriations Committee passed the proposal Wednesday. It would require city and county school systems to have at least ten mills of property taxes dedicated to public education. Twenty-four counties and six cities would have to raise property taxes if the bill becomes law. If the bill eventually passes the legislature, state voters would get to decide the matter in a statewide referendum.
