Basketball Coach Honored in Washington

By Alabama Public Radio

Washington, DC – The National Women's Law Center honored an Alabama basketball coach Monday in Washington, D-C. Roderick Jackson says he was fired from his coaching job a few years ago when he complained about inferior practice facilities for his girls' basketball team at Ensley High School. A new principal has since rehired him as an interim coach. However, later this month the U-S Supreme Court will consider whether he was wrongly fired for complaining about the discrimination. His lawyers say he has a right to sue under Title Nine. The federal law bars sexual discrimination in college and high school athletics programs that receive federal money. The Birmingham Board of Education argues Jackson does not have a right to sue because he personally did not experience sex discrimination.
