Bachus Says Veterans Cemetery on Track

By Alabama Public Radio

Montevallo, AL – Congressman Spencer Bachus says a required environmental assessment has started for a proposed veterans cemetery to be built in Montevallo. Bachus says an Atlanta-based engineering firm will conduct a series of soil and topographical tests on the site that's located near the American Village. The Department of Veterans Affairs expects the assessment to be completed sometime this fall. Congress in 2003 approved plans to open a new veterans cemetery in the greater Birmingham area. The cemetery would serve more than 212,000 veterans in about 25 counties. Alabama already has two national veterans cemeteries...one in Seale...the other in Mobile.
