Attendance was way down for Sunday's NASCAR race at the Talladega Superspeedway.
Track officials estimate that 88,000 people were on hand for the Good Sam Roadside Assistance 500. That's the smallest crowd for a Sprint Cup race at Talladega since figures have been provided.
The Anniston Star (http://bit.ly/R6x320 ) reports the crowd was 20,000 less than the previous low of 108,000 announced for this year's spring race. It was 16 percent lower than last year's fall race.
The size of the crowd left big gaps in the stands at NASCAR's largest and fastest track.
Track officials and NASCAR say attendance is down across the circuit because of the tough economy.
Track chairman Grant Lynch says the fall race may also be suffering because it has to compete with college football.
