APR Wins Top Regional Murrow

Alabama Public Radio has been honored with a regional Edward R. Murrow Award for Overall Excellence from the Radio Television Digital News Association (RTDNA). APR competed in the Southeast Regionals - small market radio - among stations from Alabama, Arkansas, Louisiana and Mississippi. All regional winners will compete for a national award in October 2016.

"The Overall Excellence Murrow is especially  humbling since it encompasses a whole year's worth of work," says APR News Director Pat Duggins. "It's easy to be good when a big story hits, but it's trickier to deliver consistently."

Every member of the APR news team contributed to the entry, which included coverage of the 50th anniversary  of "bloody Sunday" in Selma and a series of reports, and a documentary on the condition of Alabama's water supply and the health of its rivers. The entry also included excerpts from coverage of Tuscaloosa's welcome of WBC World Heavyweight Boxing Champion Deontay Wilder, Donald Trump's visit to Mobile, Alabama's same sex marriage controversy and UAB's change of heart on canceling its football program.

"As a public radio station, we are beholden to the communities we serve," said Center for Public Television and Radio Director Elizabeth Brock. "This award - and the broad range of stories submitted for consideration - reflects our mission to provide an essential, independent voice for news and information across Alabama. It is the generosity of our listeners which make it all possible."

The RTDNA is the world's largest professional organization exclusively serving the electronic news profession, consisting of more than 3,000 news directors, news associates, educators and students. Founded as a grassroots organization in 1946, the association is dedicated to setting standards for news gathering and reporting. Although news techniques and technologies are constantly changing, RTDNA's commitment to encouraging excellence in the electronic journalism industry remains the same.
