Alabama's Top Cop alleges money misuse, Hank Williams "last ride"

The acting head of Alabama’s top law enforcement agency went looking for internal problems, and he may have found one. Stan Stabler says an investigation is underway into the possible misuse of state funds. Stabler says the findings have been submitted to the Alabama attorney general's office for further action. Stabler ordered an internal review of the agency after stepping in for director Spencer Collier, who’s is on medical leave.

Local residents will learn to spot tornados today at a Skywarn class. The Franklin County Emergency Management Agency is hosting the workshop in conjunction with the National Weather service. The event is free and open to the public. Students will learn to identity cloud patterns and how to relay the necessary information to the appropriate authorities during a storm. Jody Hitt is the director of the Franklin County Emergency Management Agency. He says trained citizens can help eyes in an emergency situation.

“It gives us an extra set of eyes. People can go outside. For instance if Red Bay has a cell coming across them they can relate it to me and I relate it on to National Weather ‘Hey, there’s something happening on the west end of our county can y’all take a look at it.’”

The class will be held at the A.W. Todd Center in Russellville from six-thirty to eight-thirty this evening. ?

Alabama legend and country music icon Hank Williams is being remembered this week. Williams’ daughter, Jett will be cruising in a 1953 Cadillac through the route her father traveled during his renowned “last ride.” Her trip began in Birmingham and will end at the funeral home her father was taken in Oak Hill, West Virginia. A marker will be erected in his honor at the site. Rick Harmon is the Regional director for the Alabama Tourism Department. He says fans are free to take part in the trip.

“Here’s Hank Williams’ daughter -who probably knows about this more than just about anyone else- who is kind of giving us insights at each stop.”

The Tourism Department will post footage on its social media pages. Hank Williams was born in Mount Olive Alabama and since his death has been inducted into the Country Music, Songwriters, and Rock and Roll Halls of Fame.

America’s newest national park could be in downtown Birmingham. Congresswoman Terri Sewell is introducing a bill to designate Birmingham's Civil Rights District as a National Park. Sewell was flanked by Birmingham Mayor William Bell and others during today’s announcement at the National Press Club in Washington, D.C. Birmingham's Civil Rights District features several pivotal civil rights landmarks, including the 16th Street Baptist Church and Kelly Ingram Park near the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute.
