Alabama Soldier Dies in Iraq

By Alabama Public Radio

Birmingham, AL – Army Staff Sergeant William Brooks died Tuesday in a roadside bomb explosion in Iraq while conducting a security mission in Baghdad. The Defense Department announced the death of the 30-year-old Birmingham native. His mother, Linda, says he mailed her Mother's Day card early, and she did receive that card in the mail. Funeral services for Brooks are set for noon Friday at Antioch Baptist Church in Birmingham. Brooks is survived by his mother, his wife and two daughters. He was a member of the Fort Stewart, Georgia-based First Battalion, 64th Armor Division Regiment, Third Infantry Division. Brooks joined the Army eight years ago and had been to Bosnia and Korea before going to Iraq.
