Alabama Power warns over phone scam

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) — Alabama Power is warning that a phone scam that began this summer with its business customers is spreading to its residential customers. Spokesman Ike Pigott says a customer gets a call from someone pretending to be with Alabama Power. The caller says the customer has a few hours to settle a bill or electrical service will be turned off. The customer is told to go to a convenience store and buy a "money pack,' which is a disposal debit card. Then the customer is supposed to call back with the account information. Pigott said the scam has become more sophisticated because the victim's caller ID service now indicates Alabama Power is calling. He encourages people who get the calls to hang up and call Alabama Power at 800-245-2244.
